French Onion Soup is a classic soup recipe made of Sweet caramelized onions that are simmered in a rich beefy broth. This French Onion Soup recipe has two main components – first is the beef broth and the second is the caramelized onions. The taste of this soup is dependent on these two factors so it is important to use good quality beef broth and ensure that the onions are caramelized. It is always recommended to slow cook caramelized onions.

Tips to make French Onion Soup:

  • Alternatively, you can also ladle soup into an ovenproof bowl or a casserole dish.
  • Cover with the toast and sprinkle some parmesan cheese on it and put it into the oven or broiler for 5-7 minutes until cheese is bubbly and bread is golden.

Firstly, slice the onions around 1/4 "thick. Take a heavy-bottomed pot and heat 2-3 tbsp of oil into it. Combine onions and stir well to coat it with oil cool. Add some butter, ¼ tsp of sugar, and 1 tsp of salt (to help with the caramelization) and cook until they start turning golden.

Once done, add broth, thyme, wine or brandy, bay leaf, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce into the pot. Stir well, cover the pot with a lid and allow it to simmer on low flame for 30-40 minutes. Discard bay leaves.

While the soup is simmering on low flame, you can prepare the toasts. Slice the french bread and brush them with oil. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare the baking dish. Place these bread slices in the baking dish or tray and toast them until golden brown. Remove from the pan.

Ladle the prepared soup into ceramic bowls and add 2 slices of toasted bread to each bowl. Sprinkle some cheese on the bread and serve hot
