What is German Chocolate Cake Frosting Recipe and how to Make it?
The name German chocolate cake is not actually from German. The name may be a little deceiving. This cake is actually named after the sweet ‘German chocolate’ blend which is used in the cake. German Chocolate cake is different from regular chocolate cakes as is light-colored and has a mild chocolate taste. The entire cake is filled with covered with pecan filling which tastes so amazing. So the cake isn’t named after “German” as in the country, it’s “German” as in the chocolate. Ideal for any party or small gathering, this dessert cake is very easy to make at home.
Tips to Make A German chocolate cake frosting:
- If you are baking at high altitude, add tablespoons extra flour into the barter.
Preheat you oven to 375°F. Lightly grease two 9-inch round baking pans. Add parchment paper at the bottom of the pan to make sure the cake comes out easily.
For the Cake:
Take a bowl and combine together sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt and baking soda in it.
Take another bowl and add egg, buttermilk, vanilla extract and oil in it and stir well to combine.
Transfer the wet ingredients into dry ingredients bowl and mix well to combine.
Add some lukewarm water to make the barter thin and transfer it into prepared pans.
Bake the cake for 30 minutes and run a doneness test by inserting a toothpick inside the cake. Your cake is done when a toothpick comes out clean. Remove the pan from the oven and let it cool 5 minutes.
To make Coconut Frosting:
Take a medium sized saucepan and combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, egg yolks in it and mix well. Also add evaporated milk. Stir the mixture to combine well and let it come to a boil. Stir constantly for 10 minutes until mixture starts to thicken.
Once done, remove the pan from heat and add vanilla extract, nuts and coconut into the mixture. Let the mixture rest for a few minutes to cool completely.
To make Chocolate Frosting:
Take a pan and melt butter in it.
Transfer the melted butter in a bowl and Add cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk and mix well. Beat it lightly to spread the consistency. In case you need thin frosting, you can add additional milk into it or add more cocoa powder if you want thick frosting.
Add vanilla extract and stir well. Your chocolate frosting is ready.
Cake Assembly:
In order to assemble the cake, take one of the cake rounds and put it on serving plate.
Spread a thin layer of chocolate frosting and smooth another thin layer of coconut frosting on top.
Keep the difference of ½ inches between the edge of cake and filling.
Place the second round of cake on top and spread a layer of chocolate frosting on the entire cake. Add another layer of coconut frosting on the top.
