What Is Rajma Pulao Recipe and How to make Rajma Pulao? 

Rajma Pulao Recipe is a delectable dish of rice cooked in spices and Rajma (red kidney beans). Rajma Pulao is a delicious and tangy nutritious rice recipe that is packed with protein and fibers. Rajma belongs to the Legume food group which is a good source of protein, minerals, and fibers. This recipe is a one-pot rice recipe and can be prepared in a ziffy especially on those busy days. It is a perfect dish for lunch and dinner and can be served well with vegetable salad, pickle or raita of your choice.

Special Tips to make Rajma Pulao

  • If cooking in pan or pot, boil soaked rajma for 10-15 minutes on medium flame. 
  • You can also cook rajma pulao in a pot or pan. For that, you will need to add 3 cups of water. Cover the pan and cook it on medium flame till rice is not done. 
  • You can also add some veggies of your choice in this recipe. 
  • We have cooked rice and Rajma together in a pressure cooker for fast cooking. You can cook this recipe in a pot or covered vessel.

Pre-cooking preparations

Rinse one red kidney bean thoroughly and soak in water a night before or for 8-9 hours. Once it is soaked well, cook the beans in a pressure cooker until soft, add some salt if you want. Later separate rajma and drain the water.

Soak the 1 cup of basmati rice in water for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, strain the rice out of all the water and keep it aside.

With the help of pestle and Mortar, crush the cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves to make a fine powder and keep it aside.

Pound ginger and garlic to make a coarse paste using a pestle and mortar.

Cooking Instructions

Take the same pressure in which you boiled Rajma, rinse in water, and put it on the stove top. Add 2 tbsp of oil or ghee. And heat it. Add bay leaf, crushed spices (cardamom, cinnamon, cloves) and cumin seeds and sauté it till they turn aromatic.

Add Ginger garlic paste and sauté it till their raw aroma goes away. Add onions and stir it well. When the onion turns slightly golden, add the tomatoes and mix it well. Cook this mixture till the tomatoes turn soft.

Add 1 cup of rajma (soaked and boiled) in this mixture and saute it for a minute. Also add rice (soaked), turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, pepper powder, coriander powder and saute it for a minute. Add 2 cups of water, coriander leaves and stir the mixture well. Cover the pressure cooker with lid and cook and on a medium flame for 2 whistles.

Step 8

Once the pressure cooker comes down by its own, open the lid and fluff the rajma pulao gently. Serve hot with raita or pickle.
