What is Tamale Pie Recipe and how to make it?
Tamale Pie is an ultimate casserole and pie dish invented back in the 1990s. It is an ultimate casserole with layers of ground meat, cornmeal, corn, and melted gooey cheese. This dish is very easy to cook on those super busy days when you are running short of time. Tamale pie is a popular dish southern western cuisine with crispy cornmeal crust and fillings of meat and veggies.
Tips to make Tamale Pie Recipe:
- To make the vegetarian version of Tamale Pie, replace the meat with a can of kidney beans and proceed with the rest of the recipe steps.
To start with the recipe, preheat your oven to 430-degree temperature.
Take an oven-safe skillet and heat some oil in it. Combine ground beef or turkey meat in it and cook well whilst breaking up the meat with a spoon. Cook until meat starts to brown. it will take around 3-4 minutes.
After that combine, garlic and onion to the skillet and give it a nice stir. Slice the poblano pepper into two parts and add to the skillet. Stir all the ingredients well and sauté until onions are translucent and meat is cooked through.
Add diced tomatoes and spices in the cooked meat mixture and mix well to combine. Season it with pepper and salt and allow simmering on low heat for 5-7 minutes. Add corn and cilantro into the mixture.
Switch off the flame and keep it aside. (In case you want to make this a freezer meal then put this mixture in a container and freezes it).
Further, proceed to make cornbread topping. In a medium bowl add cornmeal flour, ½ tsp of baking powder and salt as per taste. Mix them well. Combine buttermilk, beaten egg and butter in the mixture and mix them using a hand mixer. In the last step, put in shredded cheese and cilantro into the bowl and toss all the ingredients to combine well.
Transfer this cornbread mixture evenly over the skillet’s surface, and bake for 25 minutes, until browned and puffed. Once done, take the skillet out of the oven and cook for 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy.
